Schaaf (Oxford University) “I have captured a shadow” – William Henry Fox Talbot & the Invention of Photography, inclusief de mogelijkheid voor het publiek om zelf originele zoutdrukken en documenten van de hand van Talbot te bekijken.
De van oorsprong Amerikaanse fotograaf Larry Schaaf is gepromoveerd in de kunstgeschiedenis en al decennialang gespecialiseerd in het werk van één van de uitvinders van de fotografie: Sir William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877). Momenteel is Schaaf aan Oxford University directeur van het William Henry Fox Talbot Catalogue Raisonné project (2014-2018), waarin het complete oeuvre van Talbot online beschikbaar en doorzoekbaar wordt gemaakt. In oktober van dit jaar bezoekt Schaaf verschillende Europese landen, om originele werken van Talbot te bestuderen. In Nederland bevinden zich Talbots in de collecties van Universiteit Leiden en het Rijksmuseum en ook het FoMu Antwerpen bezit er een aantal. Bezoekers van de lezing krijgen in Leiden behalve de lezing van Schaaf ook de mogelijkheid om zelf originele zoutdrukken uit de collectie van de Universiteit Leiden in hand te houden en van dichtbij te bekijken. Kosten van de lezing zijn 9 euro (leden van Scherptediepte gratis), voertaal is Engels en aanmelden kan op scherptediepte@library.leidenuniv.nl.

Lecture prof dr Larry J. Schaaf (Oxford University) “I have captured a shadow” – William Henry Fox Talbot & the Invention of Photography, including the opportunity for the public to view original salted paper prints and documents created by Talbot.
The American photographer Larry Schaaf holds a doctorate in art history and has specialized in the work of one of the inventors of photography, Sir William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877), for the past decades. Currently, Schaaf is director of the William Henry Fox Talbot Catalogue Raisonné project (2014-2018), in which Talbot's complete oeuvre will be made accessible and discoverable on the internet. In October, Schaaf will visit several European countries to study original photographs and documents created by Talbot. In the Netherlands, prints and documents of Talbot's can be found in the collections of Leiden University and the Rijksmuseum, while FoMu Antwerp also owns several. Attendees of the lecture will also have the opportunity to hold and study original salt prints by Talbot from the collection of Leiden University.
